Copyright Policy and Reuse
Last updated
Much of what Hoax and Hindsight makes is meant to be reused: in a lesson, an article, a talk or a reference work. This page sets out what can be reused, on what terms, and how to give credit. Each image and data file on the site carries its own credit line, and that line is the final word for that item.
The site's own diagrams and data: CC BY 4.0
The diagrams the site draws itself (such as timelines, comparison tables, scored prediction tables, procedure charts and schematic cross-sections of layers in the ground) and the data tables published as CSV files beside the articles are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). They can be copied, adapted and used for any purpose, including commercial use, as long as credit is given.
Each of these figures and files has a credit line that can be copied as it stands:
"{title}" by Hoax and Hindsight, licensed under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Original: {url}
To fill it in, replace {title} with the title given in the caption or file description, and {url} with the address of the page where the figure or file appears. A link back to that page is welcome, and it is one reasonable way to give credit, but it is not a condition of reuse.
Two limits apply. The license covers only the layers the site drew itself; where a figure is drawn over a third-party base image, that base keeps its own license and is credited separately in the caption. And a CC BY data table covers the site's compilation; facts from sources that do not permit reuse are left out of the files.
Quotations translated into English for the site are marked “translated by Hoax and Hindsight”. Those translations can be reused under the same CC BY 4.0 terms, with the same credit. The original texts keep their own status.
Illustrations: all rights reserved
Some pages carry drawn scenes, such as a courtroom seen from the public gallery or a crowd gathered around an exhibit. These illustrations are not covered by CC BY. Each one carries this notice:
“Illustration: Hoax and Hindsight. Generated schematic illustration — not a photograph or historical record. © Hoax and Hindsight, all rights reserved.”
The illustrations do not portray identifiable real people and do not reproduce real objects or documents, and they carry no evidence. They are labeled so that no one mistakes them for historical images.
Third-party images
Historical images on the site come from other creators and collections, and each keeps its own license. The site uses images in the public domain in both the United States and the European Union, such as photographs of paintings, prints, book illustrations and news photographs; photographs that the holding institution has released under CC0; and photographs licensed under CC BY. Where a credit line names a share-alike license, any adaptation of that image must follow that license's terms.
Each image's credit line names the work, its creator, the source page and the license or the basis for its public-domain status, such as the creator's year of death. Anyone reusing one of these images should follow the terms in its credit line and the source page, not this page's CC BY terms. Some sources are cited and linked but not reproduced, because their terms do not allow the site's use; those are described in the site's own words.
Fonts
The site's typefaces are Old Standard TT for headings, Public Sans for text and Courier Prime for data. All three are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (https://openfontlicense.org/).
Citing a page
Near its end, each article has a Cite this page block that gives the site name, the article title, the date of publication, the date of the last substantive revision and the page's address. The date of access is left for the reader to add. The site does not issue DOIs, and none should be cited for its pages.
Questions
Questions about reuse, or about a credit that seems wrong, can be sent to contact@hoaxandhindsight.com; see the Enquiries page. How the site handles sources and quotations is set out on the Retrial method page.
